[RaleysPubTest.FBK.FTW]

The 1850 U.S. Census record from Clarke County, Mississippi, on page 299, Dwelling and Family Number 50 shows: Green Railey, 21 years old, a farmer, born in Alabama. His wife is listed as Mary, no age given, but she was born in Alabama and they were married this year, 1850.

From this same record, on page 294, a Sam Railey and wife Elizabeth are listed with both of them born in South Carolina, but all of their children being born in Alabama. This family is Samuel G. B.'s father

Samuel G. B. Raley, known as Green, and his bride went to Clarke County, Mississippi the year they were married and lived near his Father Sam Railey.

On 10 Oct. 1861 Samuel G. B. Raley enlisted as a Private in Co. F. 2nd Battalion, Ala. Light Artillery, Confederate States Army for a period of 12 months at age 32.

He was listed on the Company Muster Roll as a private in Capt. Goge's Co. by Capt. C. P. Goge. This organization was designated at various times as: Goge's Co., Alabama Artillery, Co. E., Hallonquists Battalion of Light Artillery, Co. E. and Co. E., 2nd Battalion Light Artillery.

He appears on the Roll of Prisoners of War as follows:

1. Samuel G. B. Raley, Private Lumsden's Co., Alabama Light Artillery Residence 22 May 1865 is Jasper County, Miss. Of Companies G and C, 12 th Regiment Mississippi Cavalry, Confederate States Army, commanded by James Lyles, Captain.
2. Surrendered at Meridian, Mississippi by Lt. Gen. R. Taylor, C.S.A. to Maj. Gen E.R.S. Canby, U.S.A. 22 May 1964.
3. On 4 May 1865 he was paroled at Mobile. The Roll is dated 22 May 1865, Mobile, Ala.

From this record we find that he may have been a prisoner of war for about a year from 22 May 1864 until 22 May 1865. He may have been a prisoner from only 4 May until 22 May 1865, the record is not clear.

...

Following his release after the Civil War, Green took his wife, Mary A., and his two sons, now 11 and 6 years old, to Texas. Somewhere in Texas two more sons were born to them. Frank was born in 1868 and Robert Lewis was born on 8 Oct. 1870. Their mother died when these two boys were very young, not in childbirth but sometime in 1872. She was 39 years old at the time.

Children of SAMUEL GB RALEY and MARY LEMONS are:

6. iv. ROBERT LEWIS RALEY, b. October 1870, Jasper Texas; d. New Mexico.

Robert (Lewis or Lois) Raley (Samuel GB)

born 1870 Jasper Texas father was Samuel GB Raley

The following is from the Alamogordo Daily News, May 10, 1990:

"Elizabeth's father was kind of like 'Little Joe the Wrangler', she said. He was an orphan and placed in an orphanage at a very early age. When he was 11 years old he ran away from the orphanage and headed west. He worked on ranches and the trail hers that spanned across Texas. "When he arrived in New Mexico as a young man, he worked on the Oliver M. Lee ranch and through his friend Jim Gilliland, he met Jim's sister Lucy. "He wasn't a very handsome man and as he and Lucy were dancing one night, he told her she was the prettiest girl he had ever seen. Lucy said, 'Well, Bob, I wish I could say the same about you.' "Bob replied, 'Now, Lucy, you could if you would lie like I did.'"

The following is from a letter, about Bob Raley's murder, from Maurine Webb to Alvy Smith, dated 18 Jul 1990:

"In Orogrande [NM], in 1915, there was only one telephone. Bob & Lucy Raley and 7 children lived about 3 miles from this telephone. They lived in Lucky Flat and the phone was installed in the Calthorp home near the R.R. depot.

A messenger brought word to Bob that his lawyer from Alamogordo was going to call him on the telephone at about noon so Bob hitched up the buggy, because Lucy insisted on going with him, and left home for the Calthorp house.

He parked the buggy in front of the house, helped Lucy out, she was pregnant, opened the fence gate to go in & was shot by a rifle over the left eye. Another shot, intended for Lucy, missed both ... because Lucy grabbed Bob & fell with him or she would have been killed also. Bill McNew was lying on the floor aiming the rifle out the front door, his son George, who lives in Las Cruces, wrote a letter describing these events.

Somehow the screen door with 2 bullet hole punches ended up on Lucy's screened in porch and she often pointed to them saying 'this one was Bob's and this one was mine.' The door was turned upside down when it was put on the porch so the patches were near the top. "Grandmother Lucy said Bob's blood stained the street in front of Calthorps for years."

Pedigree
Alvy Smith reports in a letter dated June 9, 1990 that ``She was quite a character ... Aunt Lucy lived a hermit's life in a small shack in the Orogrande Mountains - with just her burros and dogs. ... The last time I saw Aunt Lucy ... she showed me a personal letter from Franklin D. Roosevelt thanking her for some ``spy'' work she had done in the desolate Orogrande Mountains [NM]. She resembled my grandmother - short, chunky, a mass of white hair, and she either smoked a pipe or chewed tobacco.''
The ``Tularosa'' reference concerns the famous Fountain murder case in New Mexico which has never been solved and for which much bitterness still exists almost a century later (see James Gililland): ``Again, when Bob Raley, Gililland's brother-in-law, was killed by Bill McNew in the fall of 1915, it was whispered that too much talk about the Fountain case had bought on hard feelings - though the actual bone of contention was a well which both sides claimed.''

Elizabeth Eva Raley (F)
b. 23 April 1904, d. 29 November 1992

Elizabeth Eva Raley, She was my father's [Alvy (2)] elementary school teacher in Mayhill, NM. The following is from an interview with her and her husband Loyd published in the Alamogordo Daily News, 10 May 1990: "On the day Elizabeth decided to make her appearance, there was a terrible dust storm. There was so much dust in the air that her father couldn't find the horses to take his wife to the doctor. After a long search he found them and took Lucy to Orogrande, but the doctor had gone to El Paso. They decided to go to Alamogordo on the train, which arrived late at midnight. The railroad tracks were covered with sand and the train could get no traction and the workmen had to stop and clear the tracks every few miles. The train finally arrived in Alamogordo just as the sun was making its appearance and so did Elizabeth." (Elizabeth was 11 when her father was murdered. See his entry.) Maurine Webb, who is a source of some of this family data, is her niece. Elizabeth was born at Alamogordo, Otero, New Mexico, USA, on 23 April 1904.2,1 She was the daughter of Robert Lewis Raley and Lucy Lucinda Gililland. She married Robert Loyd (Lloyd) Posey at Alamogordo, Otero, New Mexico, USA, on 4 May 1926.2,1 Elizabeth died on 29 November 1992 at age 88.2 Her body was interred at Mayhill, Otero, New Mexico, USA, at Mayhill Cemetery.3

After retiring from the Army he was a salesman and staff manager for National Life and Accide nt Insurance Company, retiring medically from there.
